The First Hainan Island International Film Festival

The never-ending international film festival.

On April 13, 2018, Xijinping general secretary at the celebration of the 30th anniversary of Hainan's establishment as a special economic zone, it was announced that the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China had decided to support the construction of a free trade pilot zone throughout the island, and to gradually explore and steadily promote the construction of a free trade port with Chinese characteristics. As a result, the Hainan Island International Film Festival emerged.

The first Hainan Island International Film Festival was held from December 9th to 16th, 2018 in Sanya City, Hainan Province. The Hainan Island International Film Festival aims to create a professional and international "never ending film festival" with the goal of "year-round exhibition, island wide screening, nationwide viewing, and the entire industry chain". On the evening of December 11, 2018, the first Hainan Island International Film Festival opened grandly in Haitang Bay, Sanya. In addition to setting up regular activities such as opening and closing ceremonies, film exhibitions, and forums in accordance with international conventions, the film festival also launches new film promotion events in the Chinese film market, as well as a national photography attraction promotion exhibition. For some photography attraction booths in poverty-stricken areas, the organizing committee will provide free support and promotion.

The film festival has designed a reviewer honor unit and a cinema influence unit mainly targeting the annual Chinese language films released in China. In the film exhibition segment, this year's film festival will fully utilize Hainan's unique geographical environment, open up public beach cinemas, and conduct an island wide tour.

The first Hainan Island International Film Festival International Film Festival showcased more than 100 masterpieces from more than 30 countries and regions at home and abroad, including many award-winning films screened in Asia for the first time at the International Film Festival. We will welcome more than 40 filmmakers from all over the world, including the Golden Palm director Nuri Bigg Ceylon, a Türkiye film master. In this unique geographical environment of the island, we have innovatively designed eight exhibition units, including the Cape International Unit, which focuses on island movies, the Tianya International Unit, which focuses on northern movies, the Pearl Picking China Film Unit, the Picking of Seashells World Excellent Film Unit, the Beijing Opera Film Unit, the VR Film Unit, the Silent Voice Silent Film Live Score Unit, and the Hainan New Power Unit, which promotes local filmmakers in Hainan. The unique geographical and climatic advantages of Hainan Island give everyone the opportunity to spend a wonderful night with art through a combination of beaches, movies, and music. Although named after the film exhibition, the curator team of the Hainan International Film Festival actually adopts a multi-dimensional, cross-border art model that integrates image and sound, and uses special local spaces to degrade the domain oriented personality of individual art categories, exploring audio-visual harmony with a diverse and inclusive attitude.
