HIIFF Introduction

On April 13, 2018, General Secretary Xi Jinping solemnly announced at the conference celebrating the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Hainan Provincial Special Economic Zone that the Party Central Committee decided to support the construction of a pilot free trade zone on the whole island of Hainan and support Hainan to gradually explore and steadily promote the construction of a free trade port with Chinese characteristics. According to the spirit of "Guidelines on Supporting Hainan in Furthering All-Round Reform and Opening up" of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, with the approval of the Party Central Committee and the State Council, the Hainan Island International Film Festival was "proposed and held in the same year" in 2018, which was included in the construction of Hainan Free Trade Port. The establishment of 12 pilot projects is an important measure to promote Hainan's comprehensive deepening of reform and opening up, and an important international cultural exchange platform for promoting Chinese and foreign film cooperation and exchange.

As an emerging cultural brand in the Hainan Special Economic Zone, the Hainan Island International Film Festival aims to create a professional, mass oriented, and international "never-ending film festival" with the goal of "Year-round Exhibition, Island-wide Screening, National Film Viewing, Whole Industry Chain".

Currently, the Hainan Island International Film Festival has been successfully held for seven sessions. The 7th Hainan Island International Film Festival will be held in December 2025.
