Renowned Swedish director and screenwriter Ruben Östlund has been invited to serve as the President of the Jury for the Competition Section of the Golden Coconut Awards at the 8th Hainan Island International Film Festival (HIIFF).
As a highly distinctive cinematic auteur in contemporary European cinema, Östlund excels at observing modern society through cold, humorous, yet tension-filled imagery. He often places characters in meticulously constructed extreme situations, allowing the identity, class, moral, and power relations hidden behind everyday life to gradually surface, constantly questioning the audience between absurdity and reality.

One of the works that truly brought Östlund wider international attention is Force Majeure. The film begins with a seemingly harmless avalanche: at the moment the crisis strikes, a subconscious choice cracks an otherwise peaceful family relationship. Östlund does not rush to judge the characters; instead, he lingers his lens on the long aftermath of the crisis, allowing questions about responsibility, intimacy, and self-awareness to continuously ferment. In 2014, Force Majeure was selected for the Un Certain Regard section at the 67th Cannes Film Festival and won the Jury Prize.

Three years later, Östlund pushed his "social experiment" into a larger space. In The Square, an artwork advocating trust and mutual assistance becomes the entry point for observing modern society. Civilization and disorder, goodwill and indifference, rules and transgression collide with one another. Östlund uses absurd and even unsettling humor to constantly test the boundaries between public morality and individual choice. With this film, he won the Palme d'Or at the 70th Cannes Film Festival.

If The Square turned its gaze to the contemporary art world, Triangle of Sadness transforms a luxury yacht into an "experimental field" for observing class and power. When the order sustained by wealth and identity suddenly collapses, the positions between people are rearranged accordingly. Östlund once again employs his signature black humor, flipping and magnifying the rules of the real world. In 2022, Triangle of Sadness won the Palme d'Or at the 75th Cannes Film Festival.
As a two-time Palme d'Or-winning cinematic auteur, Ruben Östlund also possesses extensive jury experience at international film festivals. In 2016, he served as a juror for the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival; in 2023, he served as the President of the Jury for the Competition Section at the 76th Cannes Film Festival. From creator to juror, he has consistently maintained a keen cinematic perception and a distinct auteur perspective, focusing on breakthroughs in cinematic language and the expression of real-world issues.
Now, this gaze will turn to Hainan. Östlund's acute insight into cinematic language, his continuous observation of the real world, and his open yet unique creative vision will bring a professional and diverse judging perspective to the Competition Section of this year's Golden Coconut Awards. We look forward to the Jury, under his leadership, discovering creative and vibrant cinematic expressions from works around the world, allowing different creative concepts to clash in Hainan, and enabling more unique cinematic voices to be seen and heard.
From the Nordic snow-capped mountains to the shores of the South China Sea, from creator to the Golden Coconut Awards, what traverses the mountains and seas is not only cinema, but also the exchange and encounter of different cultures and perspectives. We look forward to using light and shadow as a medium to connect Hainan to a broader global cinematic landscape, and to making the HIIFF a window for mutual learning, exchange, and open dialogue among diverse film cultures.
